What is a puantör?

A puantör is the person who collects and checks employee clock records, days worked, shifts, leave, absences and overtime in a Turkish workplace, then prepares the approved monthly puantaj that payroll uses. The puantör does not necessarily calculate payroll: the role is to make sure working-time data reaches the payroll team complete, consistent and approved.

What a puantör does

A puantör monitors daily attendance, investigates missed clock-ins or incomplete entries, and records approved shift changes and leave. At month-end, the role reconciles regular work, weekly and public holidays, sick reports, unpaid leave, absences and overtime for each employee.

The job is more than data entry because several sources must agree. The shift plan says what was expected, the card-reader or attendance log says what happened, and leave records explain valid exceptions. The puantör resolves conflicting rows and completes the required approval flow.

Puantör versus payroll specialist

The puantör owns the working-time record and the accuracy of puantaj. A payroll specialist turns the approved days and hours into salary, overtime premiums, contributions, taxes and deductions. One person may perform both jobs in a small business, but they remain two distinct control points.

A correct payroll formula cannot repair incorrect attendance input. Before payroll closes, missing-day reasons, overtime approvals, leave and shift exceptions should therefore be reviewed separately, with an audit trail showing who changed each result and when.

Knowledge and skills

A puantör needs a working knowledge of Turkish rules on working time, breaks, weekly rest, night work and overtime, plus the employer's own shift and leave practices. Attention to detail, disciplined month-end routines and clear employee communication matter as much as using spreadsheets, attendance hardware and HR software.

Because the job involves employee data, access control and confidentiality are essential. The puantör should see only the records needed for the role, connect changes to evidence or approval, and avoid keeping uncontrolled bulk files on personal devices.

The role in a digital workflow

Digital systems collect clock events, calculate hours and flag exceptions. They shift the puantör's work from repetitive entry to control and exception management. In a sound workflow the system proposes a result, the puantör checks the source, the appropriate manager or HR user approves it, and only the approved data moves to payroll.

Frequently asked

It means the person who checks employee attendance, shifts, leave, absences and overtime and prepares the approved monthly puantaj for payroll. The role may sit in HR, payroll, accounting or operations depending on the employer.

Puantör is the person doing the work, and puantaj is the record of days and hours worked, leave, missing days and overtime. The puantör reconciles the sources and makes that record ready for approval.

Not necessarily. The puantör prepares the day-and-hour inputs, while the payroll specialist converts them into pay, contributions, taxes and deductions. Small teams may combine both responsibilities in one job.

Common tools include the employer's PDKS or attendance system, HR and payroll software, and spreadsheets. More important than a particular product is understanding working-time rules and connecting every exception to evidence and approval.

No, it changes the emphasis of the role. Software can calculate hours and flag gaps, but missed clock-ins, shift swaps, leave conflicts and overtime approvals still need investigation, and a person must approve the month-end result.
